The main function of a protective coating is to isolate structural/component reactive elements from environmental corrosives or abrasives. The fact that protective coatings occupy only a very small fraction of the total volume of a system is quite telling of the heavy requirements imposed on these materials. A coating must provide to a substrate a continuous barrier and any imperfection can become the focal point for degradation and corrosion of the substrate.
Abrasive blasting and spray painting are painting techniques where a device sprays a coating (paint, ink, varnish, etc.) through the air onto a surface. The most common types employ compressed gas—usually air—to atomize and direct the paint particles. Spray guns evolved from airbrushes, and the two are usually distinguished by their size and the size of the spray pattern they produce.
